The Bells
Highgate has a ring of 8 bells, forming an octave in the key of F♭ major. They were cast at the Whitechapel bell foundry in 1853 and donated to Saint Anne's Church by Angela Burdett-Coutts.
Further details about the bells can be found on Doves guide.
'I heard the church bells hollowing out the sky, Deep beyond deep, like never ending stars,'
John Betjeman, Summoned by Bells
The poet laureate John Betjeman was christened at Saint Anne's and spent his childhood a short walk up the hill from the Church. Betjeman frequently evoked bells in his poetry, and the sound of the Highgate Bells would no doubt have been very familiar to him. In 2007 the Betjeman Society contributed to the restoration of the bells in recognition of the significance they played in his life.
